Sploeto Festival (Umbria)
The Spoleto Festival, also called "Festival dei due mondi", begun
in 1958 in the city of Spoleto thanks to the Italian composer Giancarlo
Menotti. The aim was to create a meeting and exchanging point between Italian
and American culture in general.
Since the beginning, every year in the month of July, music, ballet, theatre
and the arts of entertainment use to meet in this beautiful city. The Spoleto
Festival is one of the most important events of the region and offers lyric,
prose, ballet shows, art and movie expositions (in Spoleto cinema). The
Festival has always been for the sake of meeting the traditions of the new
and the old continent, and in the past has hosted very important actors,
ballet dancers and artists of the time. The playbill posted in last years,
have joined avant-garde and tradition, revolution and conformism, new generations
and superstars, being always faithful to quality. Beside the famous Midday
concert, which closes the Spoleto Festival, we have seen performing great
stars and beginners, ballets and naked bodies of non-dancers, marionettes
of the XVII century and innovative lyric directions. The wonderful scenarios
of the festival are the Roman Theatre, the Piazza del Duomo, the Albornotz
fortress and other architectonic beauties of Spoleto. The Festival is an
unique event, joining music, lyric and theatre arts and preserving the primacy
of one of the most prestigious Umbrian institutions. Every year tourists
from all over the world come for the festival and to visit the wonderful
Spoleto, city rich in history and art.
